Meagan's Foundation Inc, Mission

Meagan Spackman and her Grandfather, Jim Haselden
Meagan's brother Chris and the family dog Max
Meagan's Foundation, Inc. is named for my daughter who suffered a severe brain injury on June 9th, 2002. We are Incorporated in the state of Kansas and are able to accept Tax Deductible contributions in Kansas only. We are applying for 501(c)3 Federal tax exempt status as a public charity and status is pending.
We will be offering to kinds of support. The first will be financial in the form of cash grants to head injury survivors and their families. Meagan's Foundation plans to create a grant program to provide funds for persons living with severe brain injuries and their families if the families are immediate caregivers to Kansas residents only. The financial burden as well as emotional burden are tremendous on the family, not only the survivor. Grant monies given will help with therapies necessary but not covered by insurance. Therapies that would have helped my daughter were denied by insurance because only what was needed to keep her alive and functioning was supplied. Nothing above the most basic therapies were provided.
The second form of support will be in the form of an online support group created as a means of support, exchange of information and socialization. This is needed for the families and caregivers of head injury survivors and well as survivors.
Meagan's Foundation requires financing for a facility, advertising, hiring personnel, personnel training, website and funding for the grant program pursuant to start-up.
Meagan's Foundation is currently working with Kansas Rehabilitation Services and Independant Living Resource Center for referral, resouceing and support. We are currently in the process of applying for grant monies, private sector funding as well as pubic funding to maintain our status as a public charitable foundation.
The founder of Meagan's Foundation is Kat Chrisman and was her daughter's PCA (personal care attendant) as well as a medical advocate for her daughter for 5 + years. Meagan is now independant, living on her own with the help of a part time PCA and volunteers at the Wichita Public Library. She is now 7 years in recovery and continues to make progress. She was comatose for 7 weeks and spent 7 months hospitalized in 3 different hospitals. Meagan's recovery has been hard fought and miraculous. She was never expected to walk again or function independantly. It has not been without sacrifice on everyones part. It has been a struggle and a financial hardship to get the help she needed. The founder would like to help other survivors and families navigate through the minefield of insurance, medicaid, hospital staff and red tape and the many emotional pitfalls that come with such trauma.
Kat Chrisman has also created a nonprofit foundation in her sons memory, Adam Spackman. Adam commited suicide 2 weeks before Meagan's accident. Adam's Foundation, Inc. was created for suicide prevention and suicide awareness education. If you would like more information please click on the link below:
